Antonia White's 1933 autobiographical novel about a girl's years at a convent school — claustrophobic, precise, and quietly devastating. Elizabeth Bowen's introduction (included here) called it a work of rare quality, and it became a cornerstone of the Virago Modern Classics series when it was reissued in the 1970s and 80s. This is the American Dial Press "First Dial Printing" from 1980, issued in the distinctive Virago format with the portrait of a girl on the cover.
Readable copy with honest wear. A good reading copy of a novel that deserves to be read, from a writer who wrote very little and very well.
A unique find, and we only have one.
